专利说明:

[0001] The present application generally refers to vending machines, such as refrigerators and other types of product dispensers, and more particularly refers to a vending machine with features of a front cooler open and energy-efficient vending machine with a glass door. BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[0002] Generally described, an open-front refrigerator includes a refrigerated open wrap with a number of products within reach of a consumer. Because of this quick and easy accessibility and proximity to frozen products, open-front refrigerators often induce impulsive purchases by consumers, who prefer frozen products to those at room temperatures. As a result, open-front refrigerators generally provide increased sales volume compared to conventional and similar glass-door vending machines of the same size and/or in similar locations and/or with products stored at temperatures environment on shelves.
[0003] A disadvantage with conventional open-front refrigerators, however, is that the refrigerator consumes several times more energy than a vending machine with a glass door of the same size, due to the absence of a door or other type of front space isolated. The increased sales revenues generally provided by an open-front refrigerator, therefore, may not cover or justify the increased energy cost.
[0004] So there is a desire, therefore, for an improved open-front refrigerator or other type of vending machine that promotes impulse purchases and easy accessibility as an open-front refrigerator, but with the reduced energy costs of a vending machine with glass door and the like. SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
[0005] The present application thus provides a vending machine as described herein. The vending machine may include an ambient compartment with at least one ambient product, a temperature controlled compartment with at least one temperature controlled product and a vending module in communication in communication with the temperature controlled compartment so that the vending module delivers a temperature-controlled product in response to an ambient product being placed in the vending module.
[0006] The ambient compartment may include a number of ambient compartment shelves while the temperature controlled compartment may include one or more temperature controlled shelves. The vending module may include an identification module to identify each ambient product and wherein the vending module sells a temperature controlled product corresponding to the ambient product identified by the identification module.
[0007] The sales module may include an internal transport system in communication with the identification module and a sales chute. The temperature controlled compartment can include one or more temperature controlled shelves with a number of columns and the vending module can include a number of column conveyor belts positioned around the number of columns. The vending module may include one or more cross conveyor belts in communication with the number of column conveyor belts. The temperature controlled compartment can include a number of vertical runners and the vending module can include a top conveyor belt positioned around the number of vertical runners.
[0008] The temperature controlled compartment may include a heating/cooling module. The ambient compartment can be separated from the temperature-controlled compartment. The ambient compartment can include an open compartment and/or a sales compartment.
[0009] The ambient compartment can include a closed compartment with a door and a transparent portion, allowing the visualization of ambient products inside the compartment. The vending machine may also include a payment module so that the door is only accessible by a user completing a payment transaction using the payment module.
[00010] The present application further provides a method of dispensing a number of temperature controlled products. The method may include the steps of supplying a number of ambient products in an ambient compartment, supplying a number of temperature controlled products in a temperature controlled compartment, identifying a selected one of the ambient products, maneuvering a selected one of the ambient products to a temperature-controlled compartment and distribution of one of the temperature-controlled products that corresponds to selected ambient products. The step of supplying ambient products can include supplying a number of ambient products in an open bin or a vending bin. The temperature controlled product can be a cooled product or a heated product.
[00011] The present application further provides a vending machine. The vending machine may include an open compartment with a number of ambient products positioned on a number of shelves with ambient products, a temperature controlled compartment with a number of temperature controlled products positioned on one or more temperature controlled shelves, a identification module and a sales module in communication with the temperature-controlled compartment. [00024] The present application concerns the offer for sale or other use of any number of products 10. Although products 10 are shown, by way of example only, in the form of bottles 20, it is understood that products 10 may include any type or size of container, including, but not limited to, bottles, cans, bags, boxes, wrapped items and/or any type of rigid or flexible packaging. Products 10 can include beverages, food items, non-food items, consumer products and/or any type of product 10 that can be positioned on a shelf and/or that can be sold. The scope of this order is in no way limited by the nature of the products 10 intended to be used here. Similarly, although a use herein is for an ice-cream product 10, it will be understood that the products 10 herein may be at room temperature, refrigerated, frozen, heated or in any desired temperature or state.
[00025] As will be described in more detail below, products 10 may take the form of ambient products 30 and temperature controlled products 40. Ambient products 30 and temperature controlled products 40 may or may not be the same product 10. Other Product variations can be used here.
[00026] Figures 1 and 2 show a vending machine 100 as can be described here. Vending machine 100 may include one or more open or ambient compartments 110. Each ambient compartment 110 may include a number of ambient or open compartment shelves 120. Any number of ambient compartment shelves 120 may be used. Likewise, ambient compartment shelves 120 can be any desired shape or size. Any number of the products 10 can be placed on the ambient compartment shelves 120. Although flat shelves are shown here, the ambient compartment shelves 120 can be any structure that can support the products 10, such as angled shelves, gravity feed shelves , tracking tubes, product chutes and the like. Likewise, conventional vertical columns and sales columns can also be used. At least the front of ambient compartment 110 can allow free access to products 10 on ambient compartment shelves 120.
[00027] The ambient compartment 110 described here, in general, is at an ambient temperature and as such is not a controlled temperature. Also, existing products 10 can be at room temperature. Part or all of the ambient compartment 110, however, could be heated, cooled, or otherwise be at a controlled temperature, as desired, at least temporarily.
[00028] The vending machine 100 may also include a temperature controlled compartment 130. The temperature controlled compartment 130 may be enclosed and/or insulated. Temperature controlled compartment 130 can have any number of temperature controlled shelves 140. Temperature controlled shelves 140 can have any desired shape, size or orientation. Although only one temperature controlled shelf 140 is shown, any number of shelves 140 can be used. Although flat shelves are shown here, temperature controlled shelves 140 can be any structure that can support the products 10, such as angled shelves, gravity feed shelves, tracker tubes, product chutes, and the like. Likewise, conventional vertical columns and sales columns can also be used. Although temperature controlled compartment 130 is shown in Figures 1 and 2 as integral with vending machine 100, it is to be understood that temperature controlled compartment 130 can operate as a self-contained unit, allowing ambient products 10 such as on traditional shelves or storage containers, are used in combination with the temperature controlled compartment 130 as described herein.
[00029] The number of ambient compartment shelves 120 is generally greater than the number of temperature controlled shelves 140, but not necessarily so. Temperature controlled compartment 130 can be at any desired temperature from frozen, chilled, ambient, moderate, or hot. Temperature controlled compartment 130 may be in communication with a conventional heating/cooling module 150 and the like. Multiple temperature controlled compartments 139 with multiple temperatures can also be used here. Although temperature controlled compartment 130 is shown as positioned below ambient compartment 110, temperature controlled compartment 130 may be positioned on top, side or, as explained below, away from ambient compartment 110.
[00030] Temperature controlled compartment 130 and/or ambient compartment 110 may include a scanner or other type of identification module 160. Scan module 160 may include a barcode scanner, an RFID tag reader, cells photoelectric devices and/or any type of device that can read indices on the product 10, identify the shape of the product 10 or otherwise identify the product 10. Alternatively, the identity of the product 10 can be entered or otherwise indicated by a consumer, such as by squeezing a product selection button and the like. Other types of selection media can be used. Although scan module 160 is shown as being positioned adjacent to temperature controlled compartment 130, scan module 160 can be positioned in any convenient location. Scan module 160 may also reject a product 19 that is not intended to be used with vending machine 100 as a whole.
[00031] The vending machine 100 may also include a vending module 170. The vending module 170 may include a vending port 180. While the vending port 180 is shown as being positioned adjacent to the temperature controlled compartment 130 and scan module 160, vending module 170 can be positioned in any convenient location.
[00032] The vending module 170 may include an inner transport system 190. The inner transport system 190 may transport the products 10 from the scan module 160 or other location to a location within the temperature controlled compartment 130 or otherwise . The internal transport system 190 can also transport the products 10 to the vending port 180 or otherwise, as desired. Any number of internal transport system configurations can be used here.
[00033] Figure 3 shows an embodiment of the inner conveyor system 190 as a conveyor belt system 200. The temperature controlled shelves 140 can be divided into a number of columns 210 with the products 10 on top of them. Each or some of the columns 210 may have a conveyor belt of 220 positioned around it or a similar type of product drive means. Column conveyor belts 220 may also be in communication with a transverse conveyor belt 230 or a similar type of product drive means. In this example, the cross conveyor belt 230 can be positioned at the rear of the temperature-controlled compartment 130. Other sales configurations can be used here.
[00034] In use, one of the column conveyor belts 220 can deliver a selected ambient product 30 from the scan module 160 and deliver it to the transverse belt 230 or otherwise. Conveyor belt 230 then can deliver product 30 to one of columns 210 so as to be temperature controlled. Also, the column belt 220 can deliver the corresponding temperature controlled product 40 to be sold to the vending port 180 or otherwise via gravity or otherwise. Other sales procedures can be used here.
[00035] Figure 4 shows another embodiment of the internal conveyor system as a conveyor belt and chute system 240. The conveyor belt and chute system 240 may also include a number of columns 210 with conveyor belts of columns 220 as well as a transverse conveyor belt 230 or a similar type of drive means. In that case, the transverse conveyor belt 230 can be positioned around the scan module 160. Other positions can be used. A chute 250 can be positioned under shelf 140 and in communication with vending port 180. Other vending configurations can be used.
[00036] In use, the cross conveyor 230 can remove the selected ambient product 30 from the scanning module 160 and distribute it to the appropriate column 210 to be temperature controlled. Column conveyor belt 220 then can position ambient product 30 into column 210, while also dispensing corresponding temperature controlled product 40 into chute 250 via gravity or otherwise. Alternatively, a positioning bar 260 can push the selected ambient product 30 into the appropriate column 210. Other sales procedures can be used here.
[00037] Figure 5 shows another embodiment of the internal transport system as a vertical product system 270. The vertical product system 270 may include the scan module 160 positioned on top of the temperature controlled compartment 130. The product system vertical 270 may include a top conveyor 280 while temperature controlled compartment 130 may include a number of vertical rails 290 in communication therewith as temperature controlled shelves 140. Other sales configurations may be used.
[00038] In use, a selected ambient product 30 may be read by the scan module 160 and then travel along the top conveyor 280 in one of the chutes 290. Likewise, the corresponding temperature controlled shelves 40 may fall out of the chutes 290 and vending port 180 under gravity or otherwise. Alternatively, a number of angled shelves 140 can be used so that the top conveyor 280 can deliver ambient product 30 to the rear of one of the shelves 140 and temperature controlled product 40 can exit the front of a of shelves 140. A vertical transport system can also be used. Other sales procedures can be used.
[00039] Figures 6 and 7 show another modality of a vending machine 300. In this modality, the vending machine 300 can be modular with the ambient compartment 110, separate from the temperature-controlled compartment 130. Scan 160 is shown as being part of the temperature controlled compartment 130, the scan module 160 can also be positioned in any convenient location. Likewise, the heating/cooling module 150 is shown as being positioned within the temperature controlled compartment 130, but could also be positioned anywhere as desired. Also, only temperature controlled compartment 130 can be used. Other settings can be used.
[00040] Figure 8 shows another embodiment of a vending machine 310. The vending machine 310 may include a vending compartment 320 in place of the ambient compartment 110. The vending compartment 320 may include conventional vending controls 330 , such as check panels and payment devices. A consumer may make a product selection in vending compartment 320. vending compartment 320 may deliver ambient product 30 to temperature controlled compartment 130 and/or scan module 160. The corresponding temperature controlled product 40 then , can be sold as above. The vending compartment 320 can be at room temperature or at any desired temperature. As shown in Figure 9, a vending machine 340 can also be modular with the vending compartment 320, separate from the temperature-controlled compartment 130. Other configurations can be used.
[00041] In an alternative embodiment, the vending machine 310 may include a glass-fronted ambient compartment that walls a glass-fronted refrigerator, but operates at ambient temperature. The glass-fronted portion of vending machine 310 may rest integrally with or just close to temperature controlled compartment 130 and may be accessed in response to a payment operation that allows the door to be opened via a payment module, in response to the completion of a valid transaction.
[00042] Figure 10 shows a flowchart of several process steps that can be used in providing product 10 to a consumer. The process begins at step 400 where the consumer approaches the vending machine 100. At step 410, the consumer may remove one of the products 10 from one of the ambient compartment shelves 120 of the ambient compartment 110, i.e. the ambient product selected 30. At step 420, the consumer can place the selected ambient product 30 into scanning module 160. At step 430, scanning module 160 identifies product 30. If product 30 is identified, the process continues at step 440. If not, the process is terminated. At step 440, the inner conveyor system 190 can deliver a temperature controlled product 40 to the vending port 180, which is temperature controlled and corresponds to the selected ambient product 30. At step 450, internal transport system 190 can position ambient product 30 in appropriate column 210 in temperature controlled compartment 130 so as to be temperature controlled and for later use as temperature controlled product 40. The method ends at step 460. Other method steps can be used here.
[00043] The vending machine 100 can provide at least a degree of "purity" of the product, that is, only one brand, a series of brands or brands of a specific company can be recognized by the scanning module 160, so that any other 10 products or brands may be rejected. This can be accomplished, for example, by the vending module 160 being adapted to recognize only predetermined products, rejecting all others. Also, a percentage of the 10 products may be from one brand or one company and a certain percentage may be from another. To enforce an allowable "purity" percentage, the scan module 160 may further include a countermechanism to keep the inventory of different products 10 available in the temperature controlled compartment 130 and reject certain products 10 if their proportion in the temperature controlled compartment 130 exceeds a predetermined limit. Any percentage can be used here. A balance of products 10, likewise, may or may not be found in the ambient compartment 110 and the temperature-controlled compartment 130.
[00044] The use of the vending machine 100 thus provides the impulse purchases often seen with an open-front refrigerator given the use of the ambient compartment 110. The vending machine 100, however, also provides energy efficiency (and potentially even great efficiency), typically found with a glass-door vending machine, given the use of the relatively smaller temperature-controlled compartment 130 and the general absence of temperature controls around the ambient compartment. 110.
[00045] In addition, positioning the scanning module 160 directly on top of the vending port 180 can give the consumer a pleasant "instant cold" experience, that is, simulating that the ambient product 30 was instantly cooled down to its temperature desired as the temperature controlled product 140; The vending machine 100 thus provides impulse purchases, energy efficiency and an enjoyable, enhanced consumer experience.
[00046] It will be evident that the foregoing refers only to certain embodiments of the present application and that numerous changes and modifications may be made by one of ordinary skill in the art, without departing from the spirit and general scope of the invention as defined by the claims to follow and their equivalents.
